Following the murder of his parents, Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan seek out Jiraiya to learn ninjutsu. Jiraiya trains them for three years, hoping Nagato's Rinnegan would lead the world toward peace.
Hanzo of the Salamander, the leader of the Hidden Rain, fears the organization's rising fame. He conspires with Danzo Shimura of the Hidden Leaf to set a trap under the guise of peace talks.
Hanzo takes Konan hostage and orders Nagato to kill Yahiko in exchange for her life. To save his friends and spare Nagato the guilt, Yahiko runs himself through on Nagato's kunai, sacrificing his life.
After Naruto confronts Nagato, the latter begins recounting the traumatic events of his youth.
After their training, the trio forms the Akatsuki, led by Yahiko, with the goal of bringing peace to the war-torn Land of Rain through non-violent negotiations.
