The story begins on Whale Island, where 12-year-old is determined to follow in the footsteps of his father, Ging, a legendary Hunter who left him as an infant. To earn permission from his foster mother, Aunt Mito , Gon must first catch the "Master of the Swamp," a giant fish that even five grown men couldn't land. After successfully catching the monster, a reluctant Mito allows him to leave for the rigorous Hunter Exam.
