The story originated from a personal experience of co-writer Will Tracy. While on his honeymoon in Norway, he visited a high-end restaurant on a remote island. He recalled a feeling of intense , realizing he was essentially "held hostage" by a multi-hour story the chefs were telling through their tasting menu.
