It wasn't a clean break. Clean breaks are for ceramic and bone—things that can be glued back or set in a cast. This was more like oil in a freshwater spring. It happened slowly, then all at once, until the clarity we once boasted of became a swirling, iridescent mess of "almosts" and "should-haves." I look at the version history of us. The initial spark. High-resolution hope.

I’m trying to debug the silence. I’m looking for the line of code where the trust corrupted. But maybe there is no fix. Maybe some things aren't meant to be patched. Maybe the "sullied" version is the only one that's actually real.
