The creature froze, sensing the Kid's presence. Its large, heavy head tilted curiously. The Kid did not move. He knew what it was like to be hunted, and he did not want to be the monster in this little creature's eyes. Slowly, gently, the Kid reached out. He didn't grab or snatch. The furnace roared to life. A brilliant, violent orange glow filled the room, casting long, dancing shadows of the Kid and his army of Nomes against the iron walls. The heat was immense. But they weren't alone
Without a word, the Nomes sprang into action. Their tiny arms worked in perfect unison. They picked up chunks of heavy coal, waddling over to the furnace door and tossing them into the grate. The Kid joined them, lifting pieces that were twice his size, his muscles burning with the effort.
