Originally a mid-18th-century dance from Montevideo, Uruguay, the milongón was a near precursor to modern milonga, heavily influenced by African candombe.

Despite Canaro's commercial dominance at the time, the "Milongón" as a distinct new dance rhythm unfortunately did not gain significant traction with the dancing public.
