Electromagnetic waves are a form of radiation created by the coupling of electric and magnetic fields that travel through space [3]. Looking at the image, you can see how these two fields interact to form a wave. On the left side of the diagram, the vertical arrow labeled Electric Field shows the upward and downward oscillation of the electric component [5, 6].
