The story begins on the eve of Bastille Day when Michael Mason, an American pickpocket living in Paris, steals a handbag. Unbeknownst to him, the bag contains a timed explosive meant for a distraction. When the bag detonates after he discards it, killing four people, Michael becomes the prime suspect in a terrorist investigation .
