"We didn't leave because of the water," the text began. "We left because the clocks stopped sync'ing with the sun. Simeon exists in the twenty-fourth hour of a twenty-three hour world."

The naming convention was odd. Simeon was a small, coastal town that had been decommissioned in the late nineties after the Great Surge. The "11" likely referred to the district, and "#24" was usually reserved for emergency logs. But "All time file" felt too poetic for a government record.

Slowly, the edges of his monitor began to dissolve into grey mist. The sterile office walls faded, replaced by the skeletal remains of a pier and the sound of a tide that refused to obey the moon. Elias realized then that Simeon hadn't been decommissioned. It had simply been waiting for a reader to provide it with a new observer.

"The file isn't a record," the next line whispered onto the screen. "It's a doorway. And you just turned the handle."

As he read, the hum of his computer grew into a rhythmic thrumming, like a heartbeat. He noticed a small blinking cursor at the very bottom of the document. New words were appearing in real-time, appearing as if someone—or something—was typing from the other side of the screen.
